ACCORDING TO THE PATTERN

BUILDING ACCORDING TO PATTERN

DAY 4
STRANGE FIRE

WHEN PATTERN
IS IGNORED

Not everything offered to God
is authorised by God.

“Then Nadab and Abihu… offered profane fire before the Lord, which He had not commanded them. So fire went out from the Lord and devoured them…”

LEVITICUS 10:1–2 · NKJV

When pattern
is ignored.

This is one of the most sobering moments in Scripture.

Nadab and Abihu were not outsiders. They were not unaware. They were not untrained.

They were priests.

They had proximity.
They had access.
They had responsibility.

And yet, they offered something God did not command.

Not evil. Not obviously wrong. Just… unauthorised.

Scripture calls it strange fire.

Not everything offered to God is accepted by God.

This is the danger of building without pattern.

Because strange fire is not always rebellion in appearance. Sometimes it looks like:

passion

effort

creativity

sincerity

But if it is not aligned with what God has said, it cannot carry His presence.

They did not
reject God.
They added to Him.

They assumed:

  • their position gave them permission
  • their proximity gave them flexibility
  • their experience gave them authority

But in the Kingdom, familiarity does not replace obedience.

Familiarity with God can never substitute obedience to God.

You can be close… and still be out of alignment.

You can be active… and still be offering what He did not ask for.

God is holy.

And holiness means He is:

intentional

precise

and not casual about His presence

He will not share His glory with what is man-made.

He will not dwell in what is built outside of His instruction.

Strange fire is doing things for God that were never instructed by God.

  • in a way He did not prescribe
  • with motives He did not author
  • through methods He did not design

Sit with this
slowly.

Where in my life might I be offering “strange fire”?

Have I assumed that closeness with God gives me permission to do things my way?

Am I building from instruction… or assumption?

What have I added that God never asked for?

Search my heart,
Lord.

Lord, show me anything in my life that is not aligned with Your pattern.

Where have I substituted Your instructions with my own ideas or preferences?

What would true alignment and obedience look like right now?

Lord,

search my heart.

Reveal anything in me that is offering what You did not ask for. Strip away every layer of assumption, pride, and self-will.

Teach me to honour Your holiness. Give me a reverent fear that keeps me aligned with Your ways.

Let me not build from familiarity, but from obedience. Let me not offer what is convenient, but what is commanded.

Purify my motives. Refine my posture. Align my life fully with Your pattern.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

I will not offer what God did not ask for.
I will not build what He did not design.
I choose alignment over assumption,
obedience over performance,
and reverence over familiarity.
