Genesis 35:9–15 · Genesis 35:10 (WEB)

“

God appeared to Jacob again, when he came from Paddan Aram, and blessed him. God said to him, “Your name is Jacob. Your name shall not be Jacob any more, but your name will be Israel.” He named him Israel. God said to him, “I am God Almighty. Be fruitful and multiply. A nation and a company of nations will be from you, and kings will come out of your body. The land which I gave to Abraham and Isaac, I will give it to you, and to your offspring after you I will give the land.” God went up from him in the place where he spoke with him. Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he spoke with him, a pillar of stone. He poured out a drink offering on it, and poured oil on it. Jacob called the name of the place where God spoke with him “Bethel.”

Genesis 35:9–15 · Genesis 35:10 (WEB)

In Genesis 35, God speaks Jacob's new name again. Jacob has already encountered God and received the name Israel, yet he still needs to learn to live from that identity. A change in circumstances does not automatically change the words we use to describe ourselves.

The woman who survived a difficult season may have learnt to expect rejection, carry everything alone or remain unnoticed. Honour the grace that kept her. But ask whether the habits that once protected her are now deciding what she believes is possible.

Becoming begins with agreement, not reinvention. Bring an old label before God and examine it in the light of His Word. Your history can become testimony without remaining your name. Release what contradicts His truth, while giving Him room to heal what still hurts.

A new season may require you to stop answering to a name God has already changed.

Which old name do I still answer to, and where did I learn it?

What would change in one decision today if I described myself through God's truth?

Take a moment to answer honestly.

Father, thank You for carrying me through the seasons that shaped me. Help me honour my history without allowing it to name me forever. Reveal the labels I have accepted and renew my thinking through Your Word. Give me courage to live from the identity I receive in Christ. In Jesus' name, amen.

Write the old label you most often use for yourself. Describe how it has shaped your choices, then write a response grounded in Scripture and one decision that can reflect that truth.
