“Yahweh’s angel came and sat under the oak which was in Ophrah, that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite. His son Gideon was beating out wheat in the wine press, to hide it from the Midianites. Yahweh’s angel appeared to him, and said to him, “Yahweh is with you, you mighty man of valor!” Gideon said to him, “Oh, my lord, if Yahweh is with us, why then has all this happened to us? Where are all his wondrous works which our fathers told us of, saying, ‘Didn’t Yahweh bring us up from Egypt?’ But now Yahweh has cast us off, and delivered us into the hand of Midian.” Yahweh looked at him, and said, “Go in this your might, and save Israel from the hand of Midian. Haven’t I sent you?” He said to him, “Oh, Lord, how shall I save Israel? Behold, my family is the poorest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.” Yahweh said to him, “Surely I will be with you, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man.”
Judges 6:11–16 · Judges 6:12 (WEB) Gideon is threshing wheat in a winepress when the angel addresses him as a mighty man of valour. His answer is full of questions about suffering, God's presence and his own small place within his family.
The passage does not require Gideon to begin with confidence. God's commission meets him while he feels inadequate, and the assurance is 'I will be with you.' The strength of that promise rests in God's presence, not in Gideon's ability to sound brave.
Remembering who you are includes remembering who is with you. Bring your objections into prayer and distinguish a real limitation from a conclusion that you are unusable. You may need help, preparation or wise counsel. Those needs do not automatically cancel a faithful next step.
