Joshua 1:1–9 · Joshua 1:9 (WEB)

“

Now after the death of Moses the servant of Yahweh, Yahweh spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ servant, saying, “Moses my servant is dead. Now therefore arise, go across this Jordan, you, and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them, even to the children of Israel. I have given you every place that the sole of your foot will tread on, as I told Moses. From the wilderness and this Lebanon even to the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and to the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your border. No man will be able to stand before you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not fail you nor forsake you. “Be strong and courageous; for you shall cause this people to inherit the land which I swore to their fathers to give them. Only be strong and very courageous. Be careful to observe to do according to all the law which Moses my servant commanded you. Don’t turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go. This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it; for then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall have good success. Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for Yahweh your God is with you wherever you go.”

Joshua 1:1–9 · Joshua 1:9 (WEB)

After Moses' death, Joshua receives a specific responsibility and repeated encouragement to be strong and courageous. The instruction is joined to careful attention to God's law. Courage is not separated from obedience.

Occupying a responsibility does not mean claiming every space or refusing all feedback. It means accepting the place that is legitimately yours and carrying it faithfully. Constantly apologising for existing can make it difficult to communicate, decide or serve clearly.

Notice where humility has become habitual shrinking. You can acknowledge your limits without withdrawing from your responsibility. Today, practise one clear response: state a decision, honour a boundary or contribute to a conversation. Let courage be shaped by God's Word and accountability, rather than by the need to appear bold.

Courage is not self-promotion; sometimes it is simply agreeing with God's command to move.

Where do I apologise for a responsibility I am legitimately expected to carry?

How can I respond with courage while staying open to wise correction?

Take a moment to answer honestly.

Lord, ground my courage in obedience to Your Word. Help me carry my responsibilities without shrinking or demanding more authority than I have. Give me clarity to speak, wisdom to listen and humility to receive correction. Let Your presence steady me in the work before me. Amen.

Write one sentence you often soften with unnecessary apology. Rewrite it with respect and clarity, then identify an appropriate setting in which to practise saying it.
