THE ROLES THAT NAMED YOU

Luke 10:38–42 · Luke 10:42 (WEB)

“

As they went on their way, he entered into a certain village, and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. She had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word. But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she came up to him, and said, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister left me to serve alone? Ask her therefore to help me.” Jesus answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is needed. Mary has chosen the good part, which will not be taken away from her.”

Luke 10:38–42 · Luke 10:42 (WEB)

Martha welcomes Jesus into her home but becomes distracted by much serving. Mary sits at His feet and listens. Jesus addresses Martha's anxiety and distraction; He does not say that hospitality or practical work has no value.

A role can become an identity when we believe our worth depends on being useful. Mother, wife, helper, leader and provider may describe responsibilities we carry. None can carry the full weight of who we are before God.

Notice the difference between serving from love and serving to secure belonging. Resentment, exhaustion or the fear of being unnecessary may reveal where a role has become a demand for approval. Today, make room to receive from Jesus before measuring yourself by what you have completed. You are allowed to be a disciple while you are also a person with responsibilities.

You are more than the functions you perform for other people.

Which role makes me feel valuable, and what happens inside me when I cannot fulfil it?

How can I listen to Jesus within the responsibilities I actually have today?

Take a moment to answer honestly.

Jesus, help me serve with love and listen with an undivided heart. Untangle my worth from the functions I perform. Show me where anxiety has taken the place of devotion, and teach me to receive from You as well as give to others. In Your name, amen.

List three roles you carry. Beside each, write one expectation that burdens you and one practical way to serve without making that role your whole identity.
